In Maidstone for the evening, so why not have an impromptu visit to Old Street for a new Nando's?

Being on City Road, it's just outside of the Congestion charging zone and parking during the day is very limited. After 6pm then there are no restrictions on many of the side streets, so free parking. Otherwise, it's less than a five minute walk from Old Street rail station and less than ten minutes walk from Angel underground.

Arrived here at about 7:15pm and it was very quiet with just a few tables in use. I didn't expect it to be quite so large but it stretches back some way, so there is plenty of seating. Right at the front by the entrance is an open section where you can see the seating on the level below - and on the wall here that stretches from the top of the ceiling right down to the seating below is a big barci made up of different coloured wooden balls.

There's a big open plan area for till queue-ing and those getting take away. Then past the till towards the back, there are mostly table/chair sets but the walls are clad in a wooden zig-zag pattern, with funky dodecahedron shades and some colourful patch works and canvasses on the walls.

Downstairs there are many booths - two-seater square booths in red and a few larger circular booths with large black conical shape metal shades. Toilets were spotless with blue/white tiles and a large grey/green granite sink.

The food came in just under 10 minutes and was great. I went for the four thigh fillets, chips, rice and chargrilled veg. The thigh fillets were ample in size, well marinated and cooked superbly. The chip portion was large and all hot and crispy and the rice portion was large, hot, moist and fluffy. The veg was a good mix and cooked superbly - and steaming hot.

For one of the first times in a London branch, I was very surprised at how friendly the staff were. A chap with trainee on his shirt and the badge of Mannie was very chipper and chatty. He would freely waltz around the tables chatting to people and help entertain any little ones at other tables. Was checked on a few times by other members of staff who were also of the same demeanour. I had just rub my eyes and clean out my ears as was surprised with all of the bants and chat - as I was in London...

A great Nando's meal.
