Whitechapel - Gerry Louis Review
okay... Whitechapel has been picked for a month, selected in an eenie, meenie, miney, mo type situation, and I may have put this one off had I know about the noise level beforehand.... Oh my god, it was so crazy, they had us on a table that should not have been there in the first place and it was soooooo loud!
We got there just after 7pm, having had to take 3 trains, and make 3 changes due to the District line being funny at Richmond. Bit of a queue as we got in as the till queue meets when you open the door. Asked for our table number and shown the general direction so we could order food first. Was asked whether I was aware the sweet mash does not come as part of the combo meal... Yes I am, also just happy they have mash and no sign of a wedge in sight!
Found the table after ordering and traversing the restaurant to find a table against a column that should really be used as a walkway. they had a table for 8 behind us, a table for 6 opposite and a table for 8/ 10 next to us and were generally in the way for everyone walking past to get to other places. And the noise in this place was ridiculous, could hardly hear Jackie when she spoke and everyone else's conversations were audible... it's really bad. I'm assuming because it is round and there aren't that many things to deflect or hush the sound that it is just a large cacophony of noise in there.. Wish I had earplugs with me as suggested by Chris...
My food arrived in just about 10 minutes which was nice... the mash was tasty with and without lemon and herb sauce, the garlic bread was nice and toasty, the mash on top of it completed each other well... no halloumi today as I over did it yesterday, plus we were getting dessert afterwards.
I didn't notice much decoration but along the wall is some kind of inscribed design. This branch is really easy to get to but you could walk past it on a night like last night as it is not lit up and is very drab and dark. It's about a 7-10 min walk from whitechapel overground/ underground station, exit left and continue straight....
Take earplugs if ever going to this branch.
